Can a place have too much whimsy? Oh yes! But the line between playful and downright weird can be challenging… especially if you want your home to be an ode to the fantastical—without turning it into an amusement park.

In all its deep mauve and lime-green glory, this residence is the perfect union of playful, elegant, practical, and whimsical.

Illuminated by day with enormous ceiling-high windows, this 4-bed, 4.5-bath apartment in Cobble Hill is part of a new development; in its previous life, it was the executive floor of an NYU hospital. While many new developments are guilty of producing soulless white boxes, we were lucky enough to work on a brand-new space that came to us with soul intact.

Our clients are a family of four: the redheaded jewel-tone loving matriarch, her husband, two teenage daughters, and a couple of cats who prefer drinking straight from the kitchen faucet. Yes, cute pets made for some great photo ops, but it also required an extra layer of practicality when selecting upholstery. You’ll notice there’s a LOT of velvet. We also ensured their two non-feline children got involved in the design process for their respective bedrooms. It’s important to us that everyone’s space feels uniquely theirs.

Their love of jewel tones and all things fantasy informed the bold, bright designs and allowed us to play with color and pattern in a fun and distinctive way. With vibrant, eye-catching pieces in every corner, this spacious sanctuary also has a sense of openness, each room as comfortable as it is fanciful.

Sunny, spacious, and inviting, we love this project and all its aesthetic components—old & new, playful & refined, in perfect harmony.
